Description

La Gestión del Decoro y el Conflicto de Identidad en las Cartas Pastorales

This study analyzes the discursive strategies related to modesty and female conduct in the Pastoral Epistles, with particular attention to the instructions found in First Timothy. The research suggests that these regulations may reflect attempts to address both internal tensions within early Christian communities and the external expectations of Greco-Roman society.

By incorporating archaeological data from Ephesus and scholarship on the social history of the Roman province of Asia, the paper situates these passages within broader cultural norms concerning respectability and sōphrosynē. Rather than interpreting the texts exclusively through the lens of gender restriction, the study considers how the language of modesty and order may have functioned to present the emerging Christian communities as socially stable and morally reputable associations within the urban environment of the High Empire.

The analysis further explores how the increasing emphasis on household order and disciplined communal life reflects wider processes of institutional consolidation within early Christianity, particularly in response to ascetic or charismatic tendencies that challenged established domestic and social structures.
