Policy Brief: A Thermodynamic Strategy for Managing Acute Middle Distillate Shortages

The current global energy crisis is not a generic shortage of ‘oil’, but an acute, chemically specific famine of middle distillates (diesel and jet fuel). These specific molecular chains provide the mechanical traction essential for agriculture, logistics, and critical infrastructure—the absolute baseline of societal survival.
Conventional policy responses—such as releasing strategic stockpiles of light sweet crude or subsidising fuel prices—ignore biophysical reality. They exacerbate refinery bottlenecks and will actively accelerate systemic breakdown.
This proposal outlines a rational, thermodynamically optimised strategy to maximise useful exergy from our remaining liquid fuel stocks by:
1. Consolidating all middle distillate streams (diesel and kerosene/jet fuel) into a single, unified fuel pool.
2. Using minimal volumes of bio-derived additives (2%) to render the entire pool usable in compression-ignition (diesel) engines.
3. Rationing the combined fuel exclusively for critical applications (food production, emergency services, essential freight) whilst ruthlessly curtailing non-essential consumption (commercial aviation).
This approach would effectively double the supply available for critical survival uses without requiring a single extra barrel of refinery throughput, whilst demanding only a microscopic fraction of the bio-resources required for mainstream ‘biofuel replacement’ fantasies.
