What If Black Holes Are Not Holes? Rethinking the Conceptual Image of the Most Extreme Objects in the Universe

Black holes are among the most rigorously studied predictions of General Relativity and are supported by strong theoretical and observational evidence. However, the terminology used to describe them may shape public and pedagogical perception in ways that do not fully reflect their physical nature.

This article proposes a conceptual reinterpretation intended for scientific outreach and educational clarity: describing these objects as Magnatars, defined as Massive Gravitational Compact Objects. This proposal does not challenge established physics but offers an alternative conceptual model that emphasizes mass concentration, gravitational structure, and spacetime curvature rather than the metaphor of a “hole.”

A Magnatar is defined here as an astrophysical object whose mass is compressed within its gravitational radius, producing an event horizon and extreme spacetime curvature.

The discussion is grounded in relativistic gravitational theory, rotating compact-object solutions, gravitational collapse theory, and modern observational evidence.
