eGRID2024

Description

This version of the eGRID 2024 dataset in the attached egrid2024_data_metric.xlsx file was produced by executing source code that is publicly available under MIT License and was the most recently updated code in the repository that was found in the development branch. This dataset is published here by Cornerstone in the interest of making the resulting data produced by the code publicly available. These data are provided without any alteration from what is produced by the source code. The specific source code version is identified by the git commit hash provided in metadata.txt, along with the time of retrieval of data that are downloaded and used when running the source code.

The global warming potentials (GWP) used to convert CO2, CH4 and N2O into CO2-equivalents are from the IPCC AR5 report: CO2 = 1; CH4 = 28; N2O = 265.

Cornerstone did not perform original quality assurance of the code but confirmed that it was executed following the instructions in the README without errors or warnings. Cornerstone did have to run code to generate and locally store monthly datasets generator_file_monthly.RDS and unit_file_monthly.RDS in order to generate the eGRID 2024 dataset. We did so following the code prompt for those data.

We validated the code and resulting data in two ways:

1. We confirmed that running the source code for year 2023 produced the same data as released by EPA as eGRID2023 release 2.

 2. We compared this eGRID 2024 dataset against the EPA published eGRID2023 release 2 data and against the eGRID2024 data generated from the source code that was in the main branch at the time which corresponds with the eGRID R Production Model v1.0.2 release. Specifically we calculated the emission output rate in CO2e in this dataset (indicated as 2024 development branch)  and compared it to these two alternative sources (indicated as 2023 eGRID subregion and 2024 main branch).  The results of these comparisons are included in the attached eGRID2023_vs_eGRID2024.xlsx file. We found only small changes (<=1.1%) between the eGRID2024 data as generated by the code in the main and development branches. We did find differences for some regions when comparing this dataset to the 2023 eGRID subregion dataset that varied between -10% and +12% with an average percent change for subregion emissions intensity from 2023 to 2024 of -2% (= 2% reduction in 2024), but annual changes in subregional emissions are to be expected, and without closer inspection of the underlying reasons for the changes, we determined the magnitude of the changes to be reasonable.

Cornerstone provides no guarantee of the source code or resulting dataset, nor do we claim authorship or any rights to the data.
