Bronze Age Spearhead

Authors/Creators

Description

A yetholm spearhead with elongated leaf-shape blade with two crescentic perforations (lunate openings) abutting the midrib in the wings. A conical socket runs the length of the blade and contains two opposing circular peg-holes. Both blade edges have areas missing creating jagged edges which are not sharp. Spearheads with lunate openings are found in hoards across Britain and Ireland dating to the Late Bronze Age. These include the Dowris Hoard which gives its name to the last phase of the Irish Bronze Age - the Dowris Phase (900-600BC).
