The Provable Dynamics of Micromanagement: Control, Coherence, and Organizational Failure

This paper develops a standalone theoretical treatment of micromanagement as a dynamical control error, independent of but formally grounded in the coherence framework developed in Controllable Coherence in Marketing Systems. Whereas prior results established that micromanagement destroys coherence, the present work asks a sharper question: under what explicit assumptions does micromanagement necessarily produce predictable organizational failure modes, and are those assumptions justified in real organizations? We model organizations as fast–slow dynamical systems admitting hierarchical averaging under ordinary governance. Micromanagement is defined as the injection of high-frequency control signals directly into slow structural variables. Under mild and empirically justified assumptions—timescale stratification, bounded rationality, and smooth coupling—we prove that micromanagement collapses averaging, invalidates strategic inference, and forces the system into one of three provable regimes: irreversible dissipative erosion, resonance-induced chaos, or a coupled catastrophe in which chaos exposes pathways that dissipation irreversibly drains. New theorems are introduced that formalize burnout, accountability collapse, learning failure, and loss of strategic legibility as mathematically necessary outcomes rather than cultural pathologies. We conclude by showing that micromanagement is not merely ineffective or demoralizing, but dynamically unlawful: it violates the spectral conditions under which control, learning, and responsibility can coexist. The lawful limits of control are therefore not psychological but structural.
