Description

A detailed overview on the data structure of the present community is found in “MMD_data_publication_ReadMe.pdf” (“MMD_general_data,” https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.18945804).

This dataset contains audio files in mp3-format (mp3-files) and Sonic Visualiser files (sv-files) as well as annotated scores (pdf-files), accessible only upon request for research purposes [3 x 11 = 33 zip-files including 2,606 audio files (.mp3), 2,708 Sonic Visualiser files (.sv), and 53 annotated score files (.pdf)].

File names follow the scheme “year-of-recording_conductor_Mahler_xx-y.[file extension]”, e. g., “1950_Scherchen_Mahler_VII-1.mp3”, “1950_Scherchen_Mahler_VII-1.sv” and “Mahler_xx-y_seg.pdf”, e.g. “Mahler_VII-1_seg.pdf”. The origin of the audio files can be derived from the column “source” in the respective individual discography or the complete discography.

The sv files and pdf files (annotated scores) document the segmentation points as defined by the segmentational analyses of the indicated movement (→ “MMD_segmentational_analyses_guidelines.pdf” in “MMD_general_data”, https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.18945804). Most sv-files contain two recordings on two separate layers:

  1. the respective movement in the “reference recording” (for Symphonies I–IX and X1: recordings from the complete recording by SWR Symphony Orchestra, Michael Gielen; for LvE: Jonas Kaufmann, Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Jonathan Nott, 2016; for X-2 to X-5: Berlin Philharmonic, Simon Rattle, 1999; for I-Blumine: Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, Hiroshi Wakasugi 1989);
  2. the analyzed recording indicated in the file name, synchronized with the “reference recording” via the Match Plugin; a segmentational analysis of the reference recording is also available as a separate sv-file without a synchronized second recording.

For Symphonies VII und IX, additional sv-files document beat-per-beat (bpb) measurements [sv layers that contain one marker for every beat] of VII-1 (36 recordings), VII-3 (2 recordings), IX-1 (18 recordings, only for a part of the movement), IX-4 (46 recordings, mostly consisting of three larger parts of the movement); file names follow the model “1950_Scherchen_Mahler_VII-1_bpb.sv”.

This dataset includes 2,606 mp3 audio files and 2,708 Sonic Visualiser files as well as 53 pdf-files, resulting in a total of 5,367 files. Each file type is distributed among eleven zip-files, named after the respective symphonic work, resulting in 33 zip-files.
