Description

Information technology (IT) plays a pivotal role in enhancing cybersecurity awareness among Nigerian financial institutions, given the critical nature of data protection and system integrity in this sector. A comprehensive review of existing literature and a qualitative assessment of IT policies within selected Nigerian financial institutions were conducted, focusing on recent initiatives aimed at enhancing cyber resilience. The analysis reveals that while many institutions have adopted IT-based cybersecurity training modules, the implementation rate varies significantly across different regions, with urban areas showing higher adoption rates compared to rural ones (85% vs. 60%). Despite challenges in resource allocation and technical expertise, Nigerian financial institutions are gradually integrating IT into their cybersecurity awareness programmes. To further improve the effectiveness of these programmes, it is recommended that financial regulators mandate regular audits of IT policies to ensure compliance and address gaps. Additionally, targeted training should be provided for staff in underserved regions.
