Description
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly reshaping education, particularly English language learning, where technology provides opportunities for personalized instruction, interactive practice, and immediate feedback. English has become a global medium for communication, academic research, professional growth, and international mobility, making proficiency essential in multilingual societies such as India. AI integration offers tools like intelligent tutoring systems, automated writing assistants, speech-recognition software, chatbots, and adaptive learning platforms. These platforms enable learners to improve reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills independently, at their own pace, while providing flexibility beyond traditional classrooms. AI enhances engagement, motivation, and self-directed learning. Personalized content, progress tracking, and interactive exercises make language acquisition more accessible and learner-centered. For example, chatbots simulate real-life conversations, writing assistants improve syntax and grammar, and adaptive platforms adjust difficulty based on learner performance. Despite these advantages, AI introduces challenges. Overreliance may reduce critical thinking, creativity, and originality. Ethical concerns, such as plagiarism, data privacy, and digital inequity, complicate integration. AI also lacks emotional intelligence, cultural understanding, and pedagogical creativity—qualities that human teachers provide. This paper examines the possibilities and challenges of English language learning in the AI era, emphasizing the essential role of teachers. Drawing on literature, classroom observations, and educational theory, the study argues that AI can enhance efficiency and personalization but cannot replace human guidance. A balanced, teacher-guided, and ethically responsible integration of AI is crucial for fostering meaningful, effective, and human-centered English language education.
