ENTERRAMIENTO SEDENTE ROMANO-ALTOIMPERIAL EN CÁDIZ: SINGULARIDAD FUNERARIA Y BIOARQUEOLOGÍA

Se presenta el análisis bioarqueológico y contextual de un enterramiento singular documentado en la necrópolis romano-altoimperial de Cádiz, correspondiente a un individuo subadulto depositado en posición sedente. Este tipo de disposición corporal constituye una práctica funeraria rara en época romana, con escasos paralelos conocidos en la Península Ibérica.
El enterramiento procede del sector “Solar de El Portillo” y ha sido fechado entre los siglos I–II d.C. El estudio osteológico indentifica a un individuo juvenil de sexo femenino, con una edad estimada de 15–16 años, que presenta cribra femoralis activa, indicativa de episodios de estrés fisiológico crónico.
Desde el punto de vista tafonómico, el cuerpo fue depositado en un pozo simple, con tronco erguido, extremidades inferiores flexionadas de forma simétrica con rodillas y pies juntos. La conexión anatómica conservada apunta a una deposición primaria en la que el cuerpo fue amortajado.
El análisis comparativo con otros enterramientos sedentes documentados destaca la relevancia de este caso para comprender la variabilidad ritual, la gestión social de la vulnerabilidad biológica y la construcción simbólica del cuerpo en la necrópolis gaditana.
Abstract
This study presents the bioarchaeological and contextual analysis of a rare burial from the Roman–Early Imperial necropolis of Cádiz, corresponding to a subadult individual interred in a strict seated position. This body position is uncommon in Roman funerary contexts, with few comparable cases documented in the Iberian Peninsula.
The burial comes from the “Solar de El Portillo” sector and is dated to the 1st–2nd centuries CE. Osteological analysis indicates a juvenile female aged approximately 15–16 years, presenting active cribra femoralis, indicative of prolonged physiological stress during life.
From a taphonomic perspective, the body was placed in a simple pit, with the trunk upright and the lower limbs symmetrically flexed, with the knees and feet together. The preservation of anatomical connections suggests a primary deposition in which the body was shrouded..
Comparative analysis with other documented seated burials highlights the exceptional nature of this case and its relevance for understanding ritual variability, the social management of vulnerability, and the symbolic construction of the body within the Cádiz necropolis.
