A conference presentation titled (Etno)filologia śląska - perspektywy i postulaty [(Ethno)Silesian Philology - Perspectives and Postulates], delivered at the international scientific conference “Panorama badań i studiów slawistycznych XXI wieku” (Panorama of Slavic Studies in the 21st Century), held at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Silesia in Katowice on 10-11 October 2024.

The presentation examines the current state of research on the Upper Silesian language, literature, and culture, with particular attention to the challenges associated with studying and developing minority and minoritized languages in multilingual regions. It reviews selected linguistic, literary, sociological, and cultural studies devoted to Upper Silesia and discusses key methodological frameworks relevant to this field, including borderland studies, transcultural approaches, postcolonial and post-dependency studies.

Special emphasis is placed on the role of minority-language literary production and translation in processes of community formation and the transmission of cultural memory. The presentation also identifies major challenges facing research and education in this area, such as the lack of institutional recognition of the Silesian language, the limited number of scholars and critics working in the field, and the need for systematic literary-historical and linguistic scholarship. Finally, it outlines possible directions for the further development of Silesian philology as an interdisciplinary field of academic inquiry.
