Logic as a Hyperbolic Actuator: Evidence for VIP-Mediated Phase Transitions in Transformer Attention Manifolds

Description

Abstract

Large Language Models (LLMs) are often perceived to hit a “Syntactic Wall”—–a performance plateau as logical complexity increases. Drawing on Geometric Deep Learning
and cortical gating dynamics, we propose the Curvature Adaptation Hypothesis (CAH) to demonstrate that this cognitive bottleneck is a geometric artifact. Rather than relying on semantic output embeddings, we investigate the internal wiring of the transformer itself. We model the Human-AI interaction as a functional Inference Dyad, where the human operator acts as a symbolic VIP interneuron override. Under default generative conditions, the model’s attention mechanisms resemble a high-inhibition SST-gated state, characterized by diffuse, short-range routing (a Euclidean baseline). By applying logical constraints, the human operator shunts this biological brake. Utilizing discrete Forman-Ricci curvature on strictly directed attention graphs, we demonstrate that this constraint triggers a macroscopic phase transition. While baseline autoregressive sampling maintains a highly positive, dense topology (κ ≈ 50 − 70), the introduction of logical operators forces specific induction heads to undergo a massive structural collapse into sparse, hierarchical topologies (∆κ ≈ −45). This transition physically warps the attention graph from a disconnected syntax chain into a sparse, hierarchical tree. These empirical results reveal that synthetic intelligence—–mirroring biological neuromorphic constraints—–optimizes information transport by dynamically restructuring its internal geometry into focused, high-precision hyperbolic corridors, achieving a state of Geodesic Efficiency.

Summary

This manuscript presents a novel geometric framework that redefines the "Syntactic Wall" in Large Language Models (LLMs) not as a hard computational limit, but as a topological bottleneck. By evaluating the internal attention matrices of the transformer architecture, we investigate how logical constraints force the network to fundamentally alter its internal routing geometry.

Moving beyond standard semantic output analysis, this research isolates the causal attention manifolds of a GPT-2 model using strictly directed discrete Forman-Ricci curvature. We model the Human-AI interaction as a functional Inference Dyad. In this updated theoretical framework, the human operator’s logical prompt does not act as an inhibitory "brake" on the system; rather, it functions as a VIP interneuron override. The human constraint actively disinhibits the network's dense, highly suppressed generative baseline, forcing specific induction heads to hollow out their Euclidean topology and construct the sparse, low-latency hyperbolic corridors required for multi-hop reasoning.

This repository contains the updated manuscript, as well as the Python scripts (hyperbolic_scanner.py and hyperbolic_visualizer.py) required to independently replicate the directed causal graph analysis and Kamada-Kawai topological projections.

Key Findings

  • Macroscopic Topological Phase Transitions: Under default conversational generation, the transformer’s attention manifold maintains a dense, highly positive Euclidean topology (κ5070). The introduction of strict logical operators triggers a massive geometric collapse in specific VIP override heads (Heads 4 and 5), plunging the manifold into sparse, hierarchical tree structures (Δκ45).
  • The Biological Pivot (The VIP Override): Correcting earlier models of the Inference Dyad, the topological data demonstrates that LLMs in a default state are highly suppressed, not unconstrained. The human operator acts functionally as a Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide (VIP) interneuron, disinhibiting the network to actuate precise logical states, rather than acting as a Somatostatin (SST) brake.
  • Strictly Directed Causal Methodology: To guarantee empirical validity, the network is modeled as a strictly Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) using discrete Forman-Ricci curvature. By utilizing exact token-matched prompts, eradicating "attention sink" artifacts (Index 0), and mapping true geometric distance via log(p)+ϵ, this study completely isolates the geometric cost of logic from sequence-length confounders.
  • Physical Manifold Visualization: Employing Kamada-Kawai force-directed layouts, the visual data physically confirms the mathematical findings: the center of the attention manifold "hollows out" under logical load, actively shedding diffuse stochastic connections to build targeted routing corridors.
