Artificial Intelligence (AI) & Machine Learning (ML) are changing the way organizations engage with and
improve their business operations through data analysis, adaptation to changing environments, and the
generation of insights that extend beyond human cognitive abilities. Prior to AI/ML, all digital automation
merely scaled human tasks, whereas AI/ML systems will enable much greater, ongoing improvement in
business operations. This article outlines a multi-layered framework for understanding the business impacts of
AI/ML, including data foundation, algorithms, process innovation, value realization, and governance, thereby
providing a full-spectrum view of how AI/ML can drive business transformation. The case studies used
throughout this research were drawn from several industries, including financial services, health care,
manufacturing, retail, and logistics, to demonstrate that companies successfully integrate AI/ML into their
operations and achieve success as a result of combining technical ability with change management and effective
governance of the relationship between humans and AI. Successful AI/ML implementation is based on selecting
an appropriate algorithm, but also on aligning the organization's data structure with its capacity for learning and
institutional development. The article also identifies potential barriers to the successful use of AI/ML, such as
data quality, talent.
