The Effects of Digitalization, Loneliness, and Uncertainty Threats of the Modern World on Mental Balance and the Protective Role of Self-Compassion: A Conceptual Review
Authors/Creators
Description
The rapidly digitalizing structure of the modern world, increasing feelings of loneliness, and societal uncertainties pose serious threats to the mental balance of individuals. In this review study, the psychological effects of digitalization, the impact of loneliness and social isolation on mental health, and the challenges created by uncertainty and loss of control in individuals are discussed. Furthermore, the protective role of self-compassion in increasing individual resilience and psychological flexibility against these contemporary threats is examined within a conceptual framework. This study, based on a literature review, reveals that self-compassion offers functional coping mechanisms against external stressors such as digital stress, loneliness, and uncertainty through its components of self-kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness. The findings indicate that self-compassion provides positive effects on emotion regulation, psychological awareness, and stress tolerance, and contributes to individuals becoming more resistant to the psychological pressures brought by the digital age. Consequently, self-compassion-based approaches against conditions threatening mental balance in the modern world have the potential to support mental health at individual and societal levels and may play a guiding role in the development of psychological intervention programs.
