Objectivity as What Survives Translation

This note proposes a general framework for metaphysical pluralism modeled on the role of invariance in physics. Let Π be a domain of standpoints (including metaphysical construals) and let S be a codomain of intersubjectively stable structure. A projection p: Π → S maps each standpoint π ∈ Π to its structural residue p(π), understood as what remains stable under admissible cross-standpoint translations (coordination-preserving mappings).

The framework has three aims: (i) to characterize objectivity as translation-invariant structure rather than commitment to a privileged metaphysical picture; (ii) to locate phenomenology (qualitative character) on the standpoint side Π rather than as an additional parameter in S; and (iii) to provide an ontological diagnostic for representation-dependent entity talk, illustrated by the role of perturbative bookkeeping devices in quantum field theory.

A minimal formal backbone is given by treating reversible admissible translations as a groupoid and by making explicit that p factors through the orbit space Π/∼. The note is compatible with, but does not require, an epistemic structural realist reading; it also accommodates non-reversible coordination relations (e.g. coarse-graining) by moving from groupoids to categories. A schematic non-physical example (presentism vs. eternalism) is included to clarify the intended separation between standpoint-level commitments (Π) and translation-invariant coordination constraints (S).
