PROPER NAME AS A CARRIER OF CULTURAL CODE (BASED ON THE MATERIAL OF THE STUDY TEXT)

  • 1. Tyumen State Medical University

Description

Educational texts play an important role in transmitting the cultural norms and values of a particular ethnic group, and there are different approaches to selecting educational material in different cultures. The aim of this work is to compare the national and cultural features of the use of onyms in educational texts on foreign languages: Russian and Arabic.

As a result of comparative and component analysis of 22 textbooks, a sample of 2,188 onomastic units was selected, and the differential and universal features of anthroponyms, toponyms and other categories of proper names were identified. A survey of 39 students was conducted to verify the selection of anthroponyms as teaching material. The study showed that textbooks use onyms that have symbolic and ethnic components of meaning. The selection of proper names in Arabic as a foreign language textbook correlates with the religious and traditional foundations of Arab culture: The corpus, which includes onyms extracted from Russian language teaching texts for foreign students, demonstrates a connection with significant historical figures, literary texts, scientific facts and cultural realities of Russia. Onyms in foreign language teaching texts perform an allusive function, the perception of which contributes to the expansion of vocabulary and understanding of elements of the culture of the language being studied. Verification of the objectivity of the selection of anthroponyms in educational texts confirms the thesis about the inclusion of the most culturally significant proper names in foreign language teaching materials. Foreign language teaching materials are an important subject of research, as they contain authentic information about the culture of the language being studied, especially in the context of the growing need for intercultural interaction.
