Description
Abstract:
Across the world, the development of entrepreneurship and access to financial services in rural areas has remained limited due to structural challenges such as low income levels, lack of access to formal credit, and restricted market linkages. In such circumstances, cooperative societies play a crucial role in promoting rural entrepreneurship and financial inclusion, particularly in developing economies like India. This research paper examines the mechanisms through which cooperative institutions empower vulnerable sections of rural society through collective mobilization, affordable credit provision, and market linkages, enabling them to overcome persistent barriers such as financial exclusion and limited entrepreneurial opportunities. Cooperative societies encourage entrepreneurship through collective bargaining, risk-sharing, and adoption of technology, aligning with national objectives such as the International Year of Cooperatives. However, challenges such as governance deficiencies, digital divide, and lack of awareness necessitate strategic reforms focusing on training, transparency, and scalability. Cooperative institutions also promote inclusive growth by serving as sustainable models for rural economic resilience and poverty alleviation. This research paper highlights the contribution of cooperative societies in promoting rural entrepreneurship and enhancing financial inclusion. It also analyzes the challenges faced by cooperative institutions and presents policy recommendations for their strengthening.
