Agroforestry-based production of peat-free planting and soil-improving substrates

  • 1. Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF) e.V., Working Group "Farm Economics and Ecosystem Services"

Description

In 2024, approximately 4.7 million m³ of peat were still extracted in Germany for processing into potting soil or soil improvers
(IVG & GGS, 2025). Replacing peat in horticulture and nurseries is an important step towards climate change mitigation and
sustainable land use.
