GEOSPACE Geospatial Metadata Catalog v1.8.0

This archive documents a comprehensive catalog of geospatial datasets curated for environmental modeling, ecological analysis, and human impact assessment across the continental United States (CONUS). The catalog provides complete metadata and processing capabilities for 178 variables from several data sources:

MODIS Satellite Data (4 variables) Land surface temperature, vegetation indices (NDVI, EVI), and forest cover

ECMWF ERA5 Reanalysis (14 variables) Temperature, precipitation, pressure, humidity, wind components, and atmospheric parameters

GridMET Meteorological Data (17 variables) Climate variables, fire weather indices, drought indicators, and evapotranspiration

CAMS Air Pollution Data (6 variables) PM2.5, PM10, NO2, SO2, CO, and ground-level ozone from Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service; high-resolution atmospheric composition data for air quality analysis

EPA AQS – US Environmental Protection Agency (7 variables) Air quality data for PM2.5, PM10, NO2, SO2, CO, O3, and Lead (Pb)

SVI – Social Vulnerability Index (27 variables) Overall vulnerability scores, theme-specific rankings (Socioeconomic, Household, Minority, Housing), and detailed demographic percentiles from CDC/ATSDR

COI – Child Opportunity Index (36 variables) Z-scores, quintiles, and ranks across Education, Health/Environment, and Social/Economic domains at National, State, and Metro norms

PLACES – CDC Population Level Analysis and Community Estimates (40 variables) ZCTA-level health data across 6 categories: Health Outcomes (12), Prevention (9), Health Risk Behaviors (4), Disabilities (7), Health Status (3), and Health-Related Social Needs (5); includes 95% confidence intervals for all measures

FIRMS – NASA Fire Information for Resource Management System (16 variables) Active fire detections from MODIS (1km, 2000–present) and VIIRS (375m, 2012–present) satellites; 10 raw detection variables and 6 aggregated summary variables with spatial aggregation to County/ZCTA/State

STORMS – NOAA Storm Events Database (12 variables) Event-based severe weather records (1950–present) including event type, timestamp, location, property and crop damage estimates, fatalities, injuries, and storm magnitude from NOAA NCEI

Wildfire PM – Stanford ECHO Lab Smoke PM2.5 (1 variable) Daily wildfire smoke PM2.5 concentrations (µg/m³) at 10km grid, county, census tract, and ZCTA levels (2006–2020); statistical machine learning reanalysis fusing ground monitoring with NOAA HMS and satellite inputs (Childs et al. 2022)

Enhanced Features in v1.8.0:

  • New STORMS Module: Download and processing support for NOAA Storm Events Database with damage value normalization and coordinate extraction.
  • New Wildfire PM Module: Daily smoke PM2.5 reanalysis from Stanford ECHO Lab with sparse-to-dense backfill processing and Harvard Dataverse API download.
  • Public Repository: All script URLs now point to the public-facing labgeea/geospace_data repository for open access without institutional accounts.

This catalog serves as both a reference document for researchers and a foundation for the GEOSPACE processing framework, enabling automated download and analysis-ready data preparation across multiple Earth observation, climate, atmospheric composition, health, fire, extreme weather, and socioeconomic data sources.
