Description

This research examines the lived experiences of individuals with Down syndrome and autism in Thai society, using field-based evidence from the Buddharaksa Moral Community in Nakhon Ratchasima Province as a case study. The study is framed within the “Baworn” model (Home–Temple–School/Government) and the concept of “Positive Families,” emphasizing structural integration among family, community, religious institutions and public agencies to foster dignified social participation.

Conducted between 2023 and 2026, the study employed field observation, participatory engagement in community activities, informal interviews, and real-life follow-up of target individuals. Descriptive and structural analyses were applied to assess the roles of family, community and state mechanisms, as well as enabling factors and structural constraints affecting quality of life.

Findings indicate that structural integration under the Baworn framework and positive family dynamics significantly enhances social participation, reduces stigma and strengthens life stability for individuals with Down syndrome and autism. The study proposes a system-oriented development model adaptable at community, provincial and national levels to promote dignified and sustainable living for persons with special needs in Thai society.
