Description
Hemorrhoids, commonly referred to as piles, represent a frequent anorectal condition that has traditionally been treated with plant-based solutions across various ethnomedicinal practices. A comprehensive literature review was carried out utilizing published ethnobotanical texts, peer-reviewed research papers, floras and online scientific databases. The present study compiled a variety of plant species from different families utilized in the management of piles, with various parts such as leaves, roots, fruits and seeds being processed into forms like decoctions, powders, juices and pastes. The majority of these remedies are taken orally to alleviate constipation and diminish inflammation, while some are used externally to relieve pain, swelling and bleeding. The wide range of species and preparation techniques illustrated the extensive traditional knowledge surrounding hemorrhoid treatment and emphasized the necessity for additional pharmacological and clinical validation of these ethnomedicinal claims.
