Sonification of Visual Art for Accessibility: A Mathematical Pipeline from Painting Structure to Auditory Signature — Argira Station v2.0

Authors/Creators

  • 1. Argira Station

Description

This deposit contains version 2.0 of the Argira Sonification Pipeline,
a deterministic mathematical system that converts paintings into stereo
audio WAV files based on their visual structure — fractal dimension,
color distribution, spatial composition, and golden ratio proximity.

The pipeline does not describe paintings. It translates their mathematical
structure into sound. Primary mission: real accessibility for visually
impaired people in museum environments.

── WHAT IS NEW IN V2.0 ──

B — Tempo: three independent contributors (palette dispersion, spatial
variance, fractal complexity). Effective range 40–140 BPM.

D — Golden ratio hypothesis corrected: minimum distance evaluated to
BOTH golden points P1(0.382, 0.382) and P2(0.618, 0.618). Now
falsifiable and connected to real sonic parameters (mod_rate, decay).

A — Stereo synthesis: 2-channel WAV output, equal-power panoramization
from 3×3 spatial grid, granular layer when D > 1.85, amplified odd_bias
for timbre contrast, second oscillator when hue_std > 0.18.

── EVIDENCE ──

7 paintings processed (Monet, Van Gogh). Frequency differences up to
530 Hz between authors. Informal perceptual validation confirmed:
distinguishable on first listen. Pipeline is honest: mathematically
similar paintings produce similar signatures — that is information,
not failure.

── FILES ──

sonify_painting_v2.py — complete executable pipeline
analyze_mfcc.py — Phase 2 spectral feature extraction (MFCC, centroid, flux, entropy)
README_zenodo.md — full technical documentation
7 stereo WAV files — one per painting processed

── ROADMAP ──

Phase 1 — Pipeline v2 ✓ complete
Phase 2 — Mathematical validation: MFCC, spectral centroid, entropy
Phase 3 — ABX user experiment: blind/VI + sighted groups
Phase 4 — Scientific paper: ICAD, SMC, ACM CHI
Phase 5 — Mobile app prototype for museum use
