The article deals with the analysis of the usage of kinship and property terms in word combinations of various types. The semantics of kinship and property terms in the Kumyk language is studied by means of the contextual analysis of their usage. Besides, descriptive-analytical methods, introspection, and some other methods have been applied. The empirical basis is constituted by the meanings of the units under study, extracted from the works by Kumyk writers, as well as from folklore, and newspaper materials. The primary direct meanings of kinship and property terms in the Kumyk language are actualized in free word combinations with variable syntagmatic members. Secondary meanings can be realized in free word combinations with variable syntagmatic members. In this case they are contextually conditioned. They can also be found in syntactically conditioned combinations with an affix of possession and can function as an appellative. There have been found kinship terms with primary and secondary meanings being actualized in free word combinations with variable syntagma members. These terms of kinship can also be syntactically conditioned, and function as appellatives. The secondary meanings of some kinship and property terms also manifest themselves in phraseological units.
