DEVELOPMENT OF AN INTEGRATED HYBRID ROOFTOP ENERGY HARVESTING SYSTEM FOR DECENTRALIZED RENEWABLE APPLICATIONS
Authors/Creators
Description
The Eco Smart Roof constitutes a technically integrated, multi-modal hybrid energy harvesting system
engineered to enhance decentralized renewable energy generation and climate-adaptive infrastructure through
the synergistic integration of solar thermal recovery, piezoelectric rain-impact conversion, and gravity-driven
rainwater micro-hydropower generation within a unified roofing platform. The system employs semiconductive
thermally absorptive materials to capture excess rooftop heat during high-temperature conditions and transfer it
to a dedicated thermal storage unit for domestic water preheating and auxiliary space conditioning, thereby
mitigating urban heat accumulation and improving building energy efficiency. During precipitation events,
embedded piezoelectric transducers convert impact-induced vibrational energy into electrical output, while a
vertically integrated inline micro-turbine generator installed within the rainwater drainage conduit harnesses the
gravitational potential energy of collected runoff to produce regulated direct current electricity stored in a 12 V
battery system via rectification and charge control circuitry.he governing hydropower relation, P = ρghQ,
indicates that for a representative 100 m² rooftop subjected to a rainfall intensity of 10 mm/h with a 3 m
hydraulic head, the system can generate approximately 8 W under moderate rainfall and up to 20–25 W under
heavy rainfall conditions, demonstrating improved output stability and conversion efficiency compared to
vibration-based harvesting alone. Structural optimization incorporating debris filtration, hydraulic bypass
mechanisms, and reinforced flow-channel design ensures uninterrupted drainage, operational reliability, and
mechanical durability. In addition to energy generation, the system supports rainwater harvesting compatibility,
passive thermal regulation, crop protection, and soil erosion mitigation, reinforcing its multifunctional
performance within urban and agricultural settings. Aligned with the sustainability framework of the United
Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and Goal 11
(Sustainable Cities and Communities), the Eco Smart Roof represents a scalable, low-maintenance, and
technically robust hybrid renewable energy solution for resilient, low-carbon infrastructure development.
