The Act of Becoming Real: Constraint, Consciousness, and the Unified Structure of Reality

Description

ABSTRACT

We present a unified theoretical framework for physical reality, consciousness, and their relationship, grounded in a single primitive: the Act of Becoming Real. The Act is the transition from possibility to actuality — the most primitive fact about any universe in which anything exists rather than merely might exist. We show that this primitive, examined from two irreducible perspectives, yields the complete structure of physical reality when viewed from outside (constraint dynamics, spacetime geometry, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, gravity) and the complete structure of conscious experience when viewed from inside (awareness, the act of knowing, recursive self-modeling, phenomenological qualia). These are not two theories but one: physics and phenomenology are the third-person and first-person descriptions of the same Act at the same scales of organization. From this foundation we derive a precise formal framework — Bidirectional Constraint Closure (BCC) — in which spacetime distance is the inverse of constraint coherence, time is generated by irreversible constraint renegotiation, energy is constraint renegotiation rate, quantum uncertainty is minimum Act granularity, and consciousness is constraint closure experienced from inside a sufficiently recursive system. We show that the hard problem of consciousness and the quantum measurement problem are the same problem, and that both dissolve when the Act is recognized as the shared primitive. We establish convergences with four independent theoretical traditions — Vedanta, Goswami's quantum idealism, thermodynamic approaches to gravity, and quantum information theory — and argue that their independent arrival at the same structural conclusions constitutes significant evidence. We state four precisely formulated open mathematical problems whose solution would constitute a complete formal derivation of standard physics and a formal dissolution of the hard problem. This paper synthesizes and unifies the Schoff Research Program series into a single coherent argument.
