Funding for Diamond-OA-Journals. With KOALA from passion to profession
Authors/Creators
Description
KOALA is a service at TIB that offers sustainable consortial funding for Diamond Open Access publications. This poster for the Leibnis MMS Days 2026 gives an overview of KOALA and how it can be of use especially for editors and publishers.
Abstract:
The KOALA model at TIB pioneers a sustainable financing model for Diamond Open Access (no charges for readers or authors), enabling journals to work Diamond OA while ensuring their long-term viability. KOALA helps financing editorial work and operations specifically for STEM-journals. In the past, we have secured funding for many mathematical journals, the last being four journals that enjoy funding 2026-28. To fund the journals, we organize library consortia for three consecutive years. Journals can be included if they meet our standards, have realistic funding goals and fit into a disciplinary bundle. At the end of the three years of funding, we aim to renew the funding. KOALA grows by creating new bundles of journals annually, and we are actively seeking collaboration with editors, publishers, and other stakeholders in the academic publishing community to expand and consolidate Diamond OA in Mathematics and other STEM-areas.
