Description

This dataset accompanies the open-access article "Quantitative Orthographic Analysis of the Ogura Shikishi," by Paul S. Atkins and Michael R. Zeng, in manuscript cultures 26:1 (2026), pp. 1-60.  (doi:10.15460/s8e93666).   It is intended to allow users to confirm and replicate the results of the paper and to conduct their own analyses.  The dataset relies heavily on an earlier database published online by Professor Shibuya Ei'ichi, with signficant additions.

Elements of the dataset are as follows:

  1. Jibo orthographic data from approximately 5,500 waka extracted from manuscripts attributed to the hand of Fujiwara no Teika (1162-1241).  Derived from earlier work by Professor Shibuya and corrected and processed by Paul S. Atkins and Michael R. Zeng.
  2. Jibo orthographic data from approximately 50 manuscripts of waka poems, collectively known as the Ogura shikishi and attributed to the hand of Fujiwara no Teika.  Extracted by Paul S. Atkins from online and printed sources.
  3. Absolute and relative frequences of jibo used in (1).  Prepared by Michael R. Zeng.
  4. List of corrections made to Professor Shibuya's data.
