Panel Study of Russian Public Opinion and Attitudes (PROPA) – Wave 1

Description

The first wave of the Panel Study of Russian Public Opinion and Attitudes (PROPA) was conducted online (March 13 – March 21, 2024; N=4,749). The respondents were recruited through the online marketplace panels. The survey gathers insights from a wide demographic cross-section of the Russian society, providing a snapshot of the attitudes, economic perceptions, and political allegiances of Russian citizens. The panel component includes 637 respondents. Participants are Russian citizens aged 18 and over residing in Russia at the time of collection. On average, participants completed the survey in 22 minutes. The survey covers a broad set of themes capturing respondents' sociodemographic characteristics, economic perceptions, political attitudes, media use, and war-related views. Key background variables include gender, age, region of residence within the Russian Federation, settlement type, education, family situation (including presence and number of minor children), occupation, and self-assessed household material situation. Substantively, the questionnaire measures satisfaction with personal and national economic conditions; political interest, discussion frequency, and trust in major information channels (online news and federal television); perceived protest potential and awareness; perceived support for Vladimir Putin in respondents' social circles and in Russia overall; and institutional approval. War-related questions concern support for the war in Ukraine and expectations about the likelihood of selected developments in the near future, including nuclear war, a military rebellion, a sharp deterioration of the economic situation, a ceasefire with Ukraine, a reduction in crime in Russia, and improved relations with NATO. Dataset is in .csv and .sav format. Codebook is in .pdf format.
