Staphylus (Capilla) neideae Lemes sp. nov.

Diagnosis.

Staphylus (C.) neideae sp. nov. (Fig. 7 U – X) externally resembles S. (C.) ascalon (Fig. 2 A – D), S. (C.) lizeri album (Fig. 2 S, T), S. (C.) melangon stanga (Fig. 4 I, J) and some specimens of S. (C.) m. melangon (Fig. 4 E – H) due to a VHW tornal white area. Among these species, S. (C.) neideae sp. nov. has unique male genitalia (Fig. 9 I – L), with the uncus somewhat rectangular at the base, wider than long, and distally tapering towards the apex. The female genitalia (Fig. 10 M) are different from other species of Staphylus due to the lamella postvaginalis as a small funnel-shaped plate, and the proximal margin of lamella antevaginalis being very reticulated, with two more sclerotized regions as rounded lobes around the ostium bursae.

Male.

Fig. 7 U, V. Head: Brown with sparse yellow scales dorsally; pure-white ventrally. FW length: 1.3 cm. HW length: 0.9 cm. DFW: Brown. Two or three small faint white dots in the subapical area. Three white dots in the distodorsal end of cell. One white dot in CuA 1 - CuA 2. Fringe bicolored, brown and white. VFW: Same white markings as on DFW. VHW: Brown with tornal area white. Genitalia (Fig. 9 I – L): Uncus with base rectangular, wider than long, dorsally bearing a tuft of medium sized hair-like scales and distally tapering towards the apex. Fenestra developed. Valva: sacculus scalene triangle-shaped, bearing thin, socketed spines internally; harpe rounded at distal margin, exceeding ampulla; ampulla broad, rounded at distal margin, bearing a dense set of large, stout, straight and socketed spines on distal margin, very concave on proximal margin with a curved claw-liked dentate expansion on the ventral-proximal margin. Aedeagus shorter than valva, without denticles. Fultura superior bearing two dense clusters of large, stout spines laterally.

Female.

Fig. 7 W, X. The female differs from the male in the following characters: FW length: 1.4 cm. HW length: 1.0 cm. Wings: One extra white dot in M 3 - CuA 1. Genitalia (Fig. 10 M): The lamella postvaginalis as a small triangular plate. Membranous or at least less sclerotized area linking the lamellae postvaginalis and antevaginalis. Lamella antevaginalis as a very sclerotized plate; the proximal margin very reticulated, and around the ostium bursae are two more sclerotized, rounded lobes, which are not fused.

Distribution.

(Fig. 11). Brazil: Minas Gerais.

Temporal distribution.

Staphylus (C.) neideae sp. nov. is recorded only from January.

Etymology.

This species name is dedicated to Neide Teresinha Assmann Lemes, the first author’s mother.
