Description
Deliverable 4.4 of the ActEU project with a report on the analyses focusing on the electorate and members of new challenger parties in Europe: the Czech and German Pirate parties, La France Insoumise, Movimento 5 Stelle and Podemos.
This report explores five innovative parties – the German and Czech Pirate Parties, Podemos in Spain, Five Star Movement in Italy and La France Insoumise, all of which emerged in the aftermath of the Great Recession, and which are a reaction to the perceived responsiveness deficit of traditional political parties. While these parties attract protest voters they also – in particular, the Pirate parties – often focus on younger voter segments. They also belong to the most visible innovators in the European party ecosystem, both in terms of focussing on neglected policy domains and in terms of digital politics. Our report is focussed on the latter, asking whether the novel digital elements introduced by these parties can lead to increased responsiveness and, by extension, to increased trust in and legitimacy of politics.
