Vehicle types and road crash impacts - Victoria, Australia 2012-2025

Description

This data set uses Victoria road crash data from February 2026 covering January 2012 to June 2025 (https://discover.data.vic.gov.au/dataset/victoria-road-crash-data) to enable an analysis of the impact of Large Light Vehicles (LLVs) in collisions involving pedestrians and cyclists. LLVs include SUVs, large dual-cab utilities and vans. Identifying LLVs is important in analysing accident data as recent research has indicated these vehicles have a greater severity impact on pedestrians and cyclists struck in collisions, and because the number of these vehicles is growing rapidly relative to other passenger cars.

This data set contains the following tables:

  • accident_subset_processed: derived from the Victorian road crash data set, Accident table, for accidents involving bicycles and pedestrians
  • person_subset_processed: derived from the Victorian road crash data set, Person table, for accidents involving bicycles and pedestrians
  • vehicle_categorised: derived from the Victorian road crash data set, Vehicle table, for all accidents. Vehicles are categorised according to logic outlined in the process sheet of this table, to identify Large Light Vehicles (LLVs).
  • Accident_collated_data. This is a summary table combining data from the other tables to analyse the impact of LLVs on collisions with cyclists and pedestrians. This table includes a Data sheet, a Summaries sheet summarising pedestrian fatality data, and a Process sheet outlining the data and logic used.
