Assessing Collaborative Networks Over Time

Description

INTRODUCTION: Collaborations and networks are central components to the translational research enterprise. CTSA hubs strengthen both components via funding and programs. Our hub assessed their development to examine the characteristics of collaborations and network composition overtime.

METHODS: Starting in 2011, a biennial survey was completed by investigators at a single CTSA hub to identify their internal research collaborators. Additional items added in subsequent surveys included: 1) classifying their research across the translational continuum; 2) identifying external collaborators and noting if any were at a CTSA hub; and 3) asking about AI use. Collaborator dyads were evaluated each year by rank, sex, and department.  To be considered a dyad only one person needed to identify the collaboration. Social network analyses identified new and emerging networks that were also evaluated by the above investigator characteristics. Networks within and across departments were depicted.

RESULTS: Each year between 210 and 279 respondents identified collaborators resulting in an increasing number of collaborations (dyads) from 1594 (2011) to 2552 (2023) (2025 data is being collected). Each year, over 200 individuals identified extramural collaborators that represented all CTSA hubs. Interdepartmental collaborations varied with some departments reporting nearly all collaborations as internal. Analyses further identified patterns of connectivity within and across departments and based on the career stage. On a subset who responded multiple times, the longitudinal patterns were assessed, including the shifts in actors who served as connectors (high degree centrality).

DISCUSSION: Identifying types of networks, especially emerging ones that have yet to publish or secure funding, provides an opportunity for departmental or institutional intervention (mentoring, resources, or other networking opportunities). Data can also show the impact of programs and strategic investments.
