Description

This dataset contains multimodal measurement data collected within the DigiMouth project, investigating embouchure mechanics in brass instrument performance. The present dataset comprises recordings from 31 trombone players performing a standardized experimental parcours under controlled laboratory conditions.

The dataset provides synchronized measurements of:

  • Lip-specific mouthpiece forces (four load-cell configuration)

  • Mouthpiece pressure

  • Intraoral pressure

  • Audio recordings of performance

All measurements were acquired using a custom sensor-integrated mouthpiece system. Sensor data were recorded at approximately 1700 Hz and temporally aligned across modalities.

The dataset includes:

  • Raw aligned sensor time series (CSV, UTF-8, comma-separated)

  • Uncompressed WAV audio recordings

  • Note-wise alignment files (onset time, duration, MIDI pitch, note identifier)

  • Coded questionnaire responses

  • Derived proficiency levels

  • Note attribute metadata (e.g., pitch, register, articulation, dynamic level, difficulty)

  • Full experimental documentation

Each performed note is identified via a partID variable, enabling note-specific multimodal analysis across sensor data, audio recordings, and metadata. The alignment files allow precise linking between time-series data and performed musical events.

The audio amplitude scaling is not calibrated and should not be interpreted as absolute SPL. The recordings are suitable for relative analyses such as pitch estimation, spectral feature extraction, onset detection, and temporal synchronization.

All participant data are pseudonymized. The study was conducted in accordance with institutional ethical guidelines and approved by the Ethics Committee of the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (mdw). All participants provided informed consent.

The dataset is structured to ensure transparency, reproducibility, and long-term usability. All files are provided in non-proprietary formats (CSV, WAV, PDF).

This dataset supports research in:

  • Brass performance science

  • Music acoustics

  • Performance pedagogy
