Description

Temporal Alignment in Distributed Observability Systems examines temporal misalignment as a structural source of inference failure in modern monitoring and observability architectures.

Distributed observability pipelines operate over heterogeneous temporal domains shaped by sampling rhythms, aggregation windows, buffering, and ingestion delays. Despite this heterogeneity, operational indicators are routinely aggregated and interpreted as if they shared a common temporal structure. This paper argues that such assumptions are not merely implementation shortcuts, but violations of the conditions required for justified cross-layer inference.

The work introduces a minimal formal framework for reasoning about local time domains, temporal transformation pipelines, and alignment operators. It shows that common observability practices implicitly assume global orderability without explicitly constructing it, leading to characteristic failure modes such as false stability, phantom outages, distorted SLO and SLA evaluations, and cross-team incomparability.

Temporal alignment is analyzed as a modeling decision rather than a technical fix, involving explicit trade-offs between comparability and epistemic fidelity. The discussion connects operational observability practice with the general requirements for coherent inter-local inference, situating temporal alignment as a concrete prerequisite for Global Orderability and Transformational Coherence within the framework of Coherent Observational Epistemology (COE).

The paper is intended for practitioners and researchers working with distributed systems, observability, reliability engineering, and monitoring architectures, and serves as the second part of a research sequence addressing semantic fragmentation and temporal structure in operational metrics.
