Youth-Led Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention in Nigeria: Challenges and Prospects

Youth have increasingly emerged as critical actors in peacebuilding and conflict prevention efforts across Nigeria, particularly in the context of persistent communal, ethno-religious, and political conflicts. This paper examines the role of youth-led initiatives in promoting peace and preventing violent conflict in Nigeria, while also interrogating the challenges confronting such efforts
and the prospects they hold for sustainable peace. Drawing on secondary data, including academic literature, policy reports, and documented case studies, the study adopts a qualitative analytical approach to explore how Nigerian youths engage in dialogue facilitation, community mediation, civic education, and digital peace advocacy. The findings reveal that youth-led peacebuilding
initiatives contribute significantly to early warning mechanisms, grassroots conflict management, and post-conflict reconciliation. However, these efforts are constrained by structural challenges such as political exclusion, limited funding, weak institutional support, unemployment, and the instrumentalization of youth for violent ends. Despite these challenges, the paper argues that Nigerian youths possess considerable potential to serve as agents of peace if adequately empowered through inclusive governance, capacity building, and supportive policy frameworks. The study concludes by recommending stronger stateyouth partnerships, institutional recognition of youth peace networks, and the integration of youth-led strategies into national peace and security architectures to enhance conflict prevention and sustainable peace in Nigeria.
