Description

As an in English Literature graduate, I authored a research article titled Women, Marriage, and Modernity in How It Happened by Shazaf Fatima Haider, which examined how gender expectations are negotiated within postcolonial urban Pakistani society. The study aimed to explore how literary narratives reflect and critique the cultural frameworks that shape women’s educational and marital choices, situating the text within broader debates on modernity and social change. Employing a qualitative textual analysis grounded in feminist and postcolonial theory, I conducted close reading and thematic analysis to interpret representations of domestic space, generational conflict, and institutional authority. The research demonstrated that the novel presents culturally embedded forms of resistance rather than overt rebellion, thereby contributing to nuanced discussions of agency within constrained social structures. This project strengthened my ability to apply theoretical frameworks critically and to connect literary analysis with wider socio-political contexts.
