Safety-Tethered Cricket Bails – Defensive Publication (v3.0, Supplemental FAQ v1.1)

  • 1. Legal Guardian and Parent of Inventors

Description

This Defensive Publication discloses a retrofit safety mechanism for cricket bails that reduces the risk of injury from high-speed bail ejection while preserving natural bail lift and compliance with Law 8.3.4 of the Laws of Cricket.

The disclosed system employs a freely moving, gravity-biased collar mounted on the center stump, one or more flexible tethers connecting the bails to the collar, and one or more retainer elements that limit downward travel of the collar. Upon impact, the bails are permitted to lift and dislodge naturally, while post-dislodgement travel is constrained by the tether(s), reducing the risk of uncontrolled projectile motion.

Multiple embodiments are disclosed, including single-tether and dual independent tether configurations, alternate collar fit characteristics, and minor collar geometry variations within an overall hollow cylindrical form, including variations in mass distribution, wall thickness, internal cavities, drilled or molded holes, ribs, wings, fins, surface projections, or segmented constructions, provided the collar remains freely movable along the stump and gravity-biased. Such variations are considered functionally equivalent and within the scope of this disclosure.

Version 1.0 of this disclosure was first published on October 7, 2025. Version 3.0 (this release) adds expanded photographic documentation, clarified embodiments, and commercial implementation considerations. This record also includes a supplemental technical FAQ that provides clarifications regarding bail mass variability, collar behavior, and design considerations discussed in the primary disclosure. The supplemental document does not introduce new embodiments.

This disclosure is intended to establish prior art and keep functionally equivalent mechanisms freely usable under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license.

This version updates the supplemental technical FAQ with v1.1 additions: direct-thread tether attachment, silicone collar variant, and optional resting stopper. The primary disclosure document is unchanged from version 3.
