Accounting Software Used in the Workplace: Basis for Curriculum Integration

This study investigated the commonly used accounting software in the workplace to ascertain its importance for the BSA curriculum and to provide recommendations on which accounting software should be taught at Palawan State University. This research was conducted within the context of Palawan State University - Tiniguiban Campus, located at Tiniguiban Heights, Puerto Princesa City, Palawan in February 2025. Survey questionnaires were disseminated through social media channels of graduates of Bachelor of Science in Accountancy (BSA) of Palawan State University, identifying which accounting software they use at their profession, its level of difficulty in terms of usage, their mode of learning these, and the advantage of its usage in the real world. Results established that graduates of BSA at Palawan State University use Microsoft Excel, QuickBooks, and Oracle NetSuite at work, where learning difficulty varies as to prior exposure and training. Findings suggest that accounting software should be taught as early as the college level to maximize exposure to what is used in the workplace. Recommendations include enhancing the current related course to cater not only to basic Microsoft Excel functions but also to integrating accounting software training to BSA students, enhancing real-world skills, and gaining adequate practical exposure to industry-standard tools through coursework and hands-on learning.
