Description

Traditional knowledge of medicinal plants constitutes an important component of indigenous healthcare systems and represents a valuable cultural and biological heritage. For centuries, local and tribal communities have relied on plant-based remedies for the treatment and prevention of various diseases, based on empirical knowledge passed down through generations. This traditional knowledge forms the foundation of ethnobotany and continues to play a significant role in primary healthcare, particularly in developing countries like India. The present review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of traditional knowledge related to medicinal plants, with special emphasis on its ethnobotanical significance, role in traditional healthcare systems and the need for conservation. The review is based on an extensive analysis of published research articles, review papers and scientific reports accessed through standard academic databases. It highlights the importance of medicinal plants, major threats to traditional knowledge systems, and the challenges associated with over-exploitation, habitat loss and socio-cultural changes. The review further discusses various conservation strategies, including in situ and ex situ approaches, sustainable utilization practices, and the role of community participation in preserving medicinal plant diversity. The importance of systematic documentation and scientific validation of traditional knowledge is also emphasized as a means to enhance its credibility, prevent misappropriation and support integration with modern scientific research. Overall, this review underscores the urgent need for preserving traditional knowledge of medicinal plants through interdisciplinary research, effective conservation measures and supportive policy frameworks. Protecting ethnobotanical heritage is essential not only for biodiversity conservation but also for promoting sustainable healthcare and safeguarding indigenous knowledge for future generations.
