Description

Dystopian fiction has emerged as one of the most significant literary forms of the twenty-first century, reflecting widespread anxieties about technological dominance, environmental degradation, social inequality, and the erosion of individual freedom. Unlike the classical dystopian narratives of the twentieth century, which often depicted overt totalitarian control, contemporary dystopian fiction focuses on more subtle and decentralized mechanisms of power embedded within everyday life. Through imagined futures that closely resemble present realities, these narratives critique current social, political, and technological trends. This paper examines the major themes and concerns that characterize twenty-first-century dystopian fiction, including surveillance and loss of privacy, climate crisis and environmental collapse, technological dehumanization, economic inequality, and struggles for identity and agency. Drawing on selected contemporary dystopian texts and critical theories, the study explores how modern authors portray societies shaped by data surveillance, artificial intelligence, ecological instability, and neoliberal power structures. The analysis highlights how dystopian fiction functions not merely as speculative storytelling but as a critical intervention that exposes the potential consequences of unchecked technological progress and environmental neglect.Furthermore, the paper investigates the role of resistance and human agency within dystopian narratives, emphasizing how individual and collective acts of defiance challenge systems of domination. By foregrounding ethical dilemmas and moral responsibility, twenty-first-century dystopian fiction encourages readers to reflect on their complicity within existing systems of control. Ultimately, the paper argues that contemporary dystopian literature serves as both a mirror and a warning, urging vigilance, empathy, and critical engagement with the realities of the modern world.
