Education, Multilingualism and Sustainable Development in Nigeria
Authors/Creators
Description
Education is the process through which individuals acquire knowledge, skills, and values that foster critical thinking, personal growth, and social participation. Beyond formal instruction, it is a lifelong practice that transforms individuals from ignorance to informed and engaged citizens capable of contributing meaningfully to their communities. In a linguistically diverse country like Nigeria, multilingual education plays a crucial role in sustainable development by bridging cultural gaps, preserving local knowledge, and promoting inclusive learning. This study adopts a qualitative descriptive approach to review existing literature on the intersection of education, language, and sustainable development. Findings indicate that integrating multiple languages in educational programs, particularly in decentered and rural communities, enhances environmental awareness, supports social equity, and facilitates local economic development, demonstrating the transformative potential of education when aligned with both cultural and sustainability objectives.
