Description

This study provides a comprehensive evaluation of epidemiological trends, risk stratification strategies, and preventive interventional approaches for sudden cardiac death (SCD) in athletes diagnosed with or suspected of having arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC). Conducted as a systematic review and meta-analysis, it synthesizes data from multiple clinical studies to clarify the burden and determinants of SCD risk in this high-risk athletic population.

The review analyzes the prevalence and incidence patterns of ARVC among competitive and recreational athletes, emphasizing how intense physical activity may accelerate disease progression and increase arrhythmic risk. It evaluates clinical, imaging, genetic, and electrophysiological markers used for risk stratification, including ventricular arrhythmia burden, structural right ventricular abnormalities, myocardial fibrosis, and pathogenic desmosomal mutations.

Additionally, the study assesses the effectiveness of preventive and interventional strategies, such as sports restriction, pharmacological therapy, catheter ablation, and implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) placement. The findings aim to support evidence-based screening protocols, personalized risk assessment, and targeted preventive interventions to reduce the incidence of sudden cardiac death among athletes with ARVC.
