Beyond Representation - Consciousness as Structural Rule-Modification under Recurrence

Authors/Creators

Description

Representational theories define consciousness through states, contents, or neural correlates.
This paper introduces a structural alternative within the KOGNETIK framework:
Consciousness is not a state but the rule by which states transform under recurrence.

Starting from the operator
Ψ = ∂S/∂R (structural sensitivity to recurrence)
the paper defines consciousness as a second-order operator
Consciousness = ∂Ψ/∂R,
the system’s capacity to modify the rules that govern structural drift.

This yields a unified operator grammar for biological, cognitive, artificial, and social systems:

  • consciousness = rule-modification of rule-modification

  • subjective experience = perception of structural drift

  • identity = structural invariance under maximal recurrence

  • language = drift-compression

  • inner voice = sequential drift-mapping

  • cognemes = minimal rule-mutation units

  • five recursive orders of consciousness (1–5)

The theory dissolves representational limitations by reframing consciousness as autological recursion — the ability of a system to modify how it modifies itself.
It provides formal definitions, operational criteria, domain-general predictions, and falsification pathways.
The result is a non-ascriptive, empirically testable structural law of consciousness applicable to neural, biological, artificial, and social systems.

Kognetik Series Information

KOGNETIK — Minimal Operator Definition of Reflexivity (Ψ = ∂S/∂R)

Reflexivity as structural rate-of-change:
Ψ = ∂S/∂R measures structural drift under recurrence.

Process, not state:
Reflexivity specifies a transformation rule rather than a content or level.

Domain-independent operator:
Applicable across biological, cognitive, artificial, social, industrial, and geophysical systems.

Non-ascriptive and empirically testable:
Ψ enables comparative analysis of systems via observable structure and recurrence.

Higher-order phenomena as specifications:
Learning, adaptation, consciousness, governance, and identity are structured regimes of Ψ.
