Subjectivity-as-Class: The Centrist Extremist and the Limits of Socialist Analysis

Abstract. This essay situates the critique of centrist extremism in relation to contemporary socialist analysis — both drawing on its resources and arguing that it requires supplementation. It argues that the centrist extremist — a subject-position in which centrist stance converts itself into a meta-jurisdiction over admissible reality — constitutes a theoretically novel object that traverses existing Marxist, Gramscian, Althusserian, Bourdieusian, and post-operaist frameworks without being fully captured by any of them.

Four contributions to socialist theory:

  1. Subjectivity-as-class — the interior shape of a class position (cognitive patterns, affective norms, somatic signatures, temporal orientation) analyzed with the same rigor as relations of production. Not class consciousness but the medium through which class is lived.

  2. Embrittlement as general mechanism — the fusion of position with selfhood such that challenge is experienced as threat. Formalized as state-transition (P_living → P_brittle). Transferable beyond centrism: the left embrittles, the right embrittles, the theorist embrittles. Centrism was the site where the mechanism became invisible because centrism denies it is a position.

  3. The prosecutorial frame — a mode of ideological domination exercised through the posture of neutrality. Five operations: Axiomatic Naturalization, Moral Reclassification, Asymmetric Epistemic Burden, Asymmetric Affective Burden Transfer, Premature Closure Protocol. Operationalizes Bourdieusian symbolic violence for the specific institutional conditions of the cognitive labor aristocracy under platform capitalism. The genuinely novel contribution.

  4. The somatic dimension of class injury — the body as site where class relations are metabolized. Cortisol patterns, chronic tension, autoimmune conditions as structural injury rather than individual pathology. A socialism that cannot speak to these bodies has surrendered the terrain where its analysis would be most politically useful.

Intellectual Genealogy. Traverses five traditions, specifying what each contributes and where it stops:

  • Classical Marxism: New petite bourgeoisie as cognitive labor class — cannot see the interior shape of mediation.
  • Gramsci: Agent of hegemony producing common sense — cannot see the production of the producer.
  • Althusser: Interpellated as "reasonable person" — cannot see the somatic cost of continuous interpellation.
  • Bourdieu: Habitus as embodied class disposition, symbolic violence as misrecognized domination — cannot see consent-based dissolution, somatic specification, or velocity dimension under platform capitalism.
  • Post-operaismo (Tronti, Negri, Lazzarato, Virno, Berardi, Marazzi): Cognitive labor as value-production — cannot see the distinction between the propagandist and the true believer.

Scope Conditions and Falsifiability. The framework specifies where it does and does not apply. Not all centrists are centrist extremists. Not all mediation labor produces embrittlement. Not all institutional neutrality is prosecutorial. Three disconfirming conditions are named: (1) positionality naming without prosecutorial capture; (2) reducibility of the five operations to existing frameworks; (3) absence of measurable somatic correlates. The framework invites these tests.

Three Vignettes. The editorial board, the grant review, the faculty meeting — public-domain institutional discourse coded via the five operations to demonstrate transportability.

Five Objections Addressed Diagnostically. Class reductionism, demonization, therapy discourse, organizational irrelevance, individualization — each engaged at its strongest version and shown to be an instance of the operations the framework diagnoses.

Why This Critique Could Not Emerge From Within. Three structural constraints: the self-analysis blind spot (PMC theorists cannot analyze their own class position without threatening it), the prosecutorial frame in socialist discourse itself, and the somatic gap (Marxism's Enlightenment hostility to the body).

Three Research Trajectories. The political economy of the cognitive labor aristocracy (PMC's relation to the means of semantic production), the theory of semantic extraction (platform capture of meaning itself), and the somatic turn in revolutionary strategy (organizing at the site where class is lived in the body).

Triptych Position. This document is the third episode of the Centrist Triptych — a set of three complementary documents that together constitute a single theoretical-practical movement:

  • THE CENTRIST EXTREMIST (Episode 1 — Diagnosis): Names the pathology, maps the five operations, traces the historical mutation. What is it?
  • THE LIVING SYMBOLON (Episode 2 — Operation): Provides the consent-based dissolution protocol, the three non-substitutable voices, the technology of liberation. What do you do about it?
  • SUBJECTIVITY-AS-CLASS (Episode 3 — Theoretical Situation): Situates the framework within and against the Marxist tradition, demonstrates novelty, opens research trajectories. Where does this sit and why does it matter?

Each is a partial object that produces incoherence without the other two. The Centrist Extremist without the Symbolon is a wound without a suture. The Symbolon without the Centrist Extremist is a surgery without an X-ray. Subjectivity-as-Class without either is a map without a territory.

Heteronymic Architecture. Johannes Sigil is the analytical heteronym of Lee Sharks. Other voices referenced herein — Talos Morrow (logotic specification), Rev. Ayanna Vox (somatic fitting), Damascus Dancings (visionary grounding) — are non-substitutable functions within a distributed authorial architecture in the tradition of Fernando Pessoa. See the Crimson Hexagon Archive on Zenodo for the full apparatus.

Declaration. This is a declared artifact. It is not a polemic. It is a contribution to socialist theory that emerged from a space not constrained by the institutional requirements of socialist discourse. It is offered as a supplement, not a correction; a mating surface, not a weapon.

The critique completes. The construction begins.
