El tiempo como materia activa

En la antigüedad los arquitectos pretendieron burlar el paso del tiempo mediante sus sólidas construcciones. Esta quimera se cuestionó a comienzos del siglo XX con la obsolescencia programada de los futuristas: «Las casas durarán menos que nosotros… Cada generación deberá construir su propia ciudad». El presente texto nos explica cómo el tiempo se ha convertido en una materia activa más en el trabajo del arquitecto contemporáneo. La arquitectura, como la música, la literatura o el cine, es una disciplina temporal. Veremos que en el Renacimiento la arquitectura tomará conciencia de su propia historia. También cómo con Palladio, el papel impreso se convertirá en un medio más eficaz para conquistar el futuro que la propia realidad construida. Pero el verdadero cambio vendrá en el siglo XX cuando desde las ciencias, las artes y los medios de comunicación se infiltre una nueva conciencia temporal que cambiará el discurso de los arquitectos en la segunda mitad del siglo. Desde la asimilación del espacio-tiempo, pasando por la imagen-tiempo cinematográfica o el tiempo espectacular del capitalismo, el autor propone un viaje a través de la multiplicidad del tiempo que inevitablemente reverbera en la arquitectura actual.

In ancient times, architects sought to defy the passage of time through their solid constructions. This chimera was questioned at the beginning of the 20th century with the planned obsolescence of the futurists: “Houses will last less than us... Each generation will have to build its own city.” This text explains how time has become another active material in the work of contemporary architects. Architecture, like music, literature, and cinema, is a temporal discipline. We will see that during the Renaissance, architecture became aware of its own history. We will also see how, with Palladio, printed paper became a more effective means of conquering the future than built reality itself. But the real change will come in the 20th century when a new temporal consciousness infiltrates the sciences, the arts, and the media, changing the discourse of architects in the second half of the century. From the assimilation of space-time, through the cinematic image-time or the spectacular time of capitalism, the author proposes a journey through the multiplicity of time that inevitably reverberates in today's architecture.
