Authors/Creators
Description
The term ‘feminism’ has a universal significance. It emerged as a morning star to emphasise the progress and equality of women. In the early period, the word ‘woman’ was used to denote the biological characteristics of a woman. Eventually, the term ‘feminism’ has been used to discuss the rights of women. It represents a feminist movement that started to emphasise the issues related to the rights of women and to defy violence committed against women. Basically, literature reflects the life of the common people and portrays its mundane themes. Women occupy a significant place in it. From the classical literature to the modern writings, the state of women has been discussed continuously. Thus, women have become an integral part of literary discourse. In modern Tamil poetry, poets have taken womanhood and celebrated it for many years as an important theme and created poems centred around it. After feminism emerged as a movement in India, modern literature has become a tool through which women can assert their rights and freedom. Feminists assert that poetry is a significant literary form that enables a woman to express her emotions and experiences in her own language and style. Nevertheless, this study focuses on how the poet Sirpi has portrayed the social status of women in his poems.
