Maintenance of Road Infrastructure: A Strategic Challenge in Transformation
Authors/Creators
Description
The analysis of data on spending for road infrastructure maintenance in the period 2019–2023
highlights a deeply heterogeneous reality, influenced by economic, climatic, political, and
infrastructural factors. While high-income countries generally show sustained and in some cases
growing expenditure, emerging economies and non-OECD countries display lower and often
discontinuous investment levels, albeit with some interesting exceptions. Road maintenance
represents a fundamental item in transport budgets, as it contributes to everyday mobility safety, the
reduction of logistics costs, and the resilience of infrastructure.
