CURRICULUM REVIEW AND HARMONIZATION OF POST GRADUATE PROGRAMS FOR NATIONAL RELEVANCE AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

  • 1. Department of Curriculum Studies and Educational Technology, Faculty of Education University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria

Description

The global demand for responsive and competitive higher educational outcomes requires continuous curriculum review and harmonization to ensure national relevance and sustainability. In Nigeria, PGE plays a critical role in advancing knowledge, skilled manpower, and research output needed for national development, industrial growth, and innovation. However, persistent challenges, such as obsolete curricula, inadequate funding, and limited industry linkages, have hindered the responsiveness of postgraduate programs to societal needs. This paper examines the concepts, principles, and significance of curriculum review and harmonization in Nigerian higher education, focusing on aligning postgraduate curricula with labor market demands, international standards and national development priorities. A comparative analysis among countries such as South Africa, China, the United Kingdom, Nigeria, and the United States revealed the need for industry collaboration, outcome-based education, digital literacy integration, interdisciplinary approaches, and employability skills in postgraduate programs. Therefore, the paper emphasizes the importance of harmonization as a framework for quality assurance, mobility, and comparability across institutions without eroding institutional autonomy. Challenges, such as politicization, implementation bottlenecks, and resistance to change, were considered. Recommendations include strengthening research capacity, industry collaboration, digital transformation, and global benchmarking for attaining national relevance and sustainable development.
