Description

Summary - The Catalogue of Birds of the Province of Cuneo by Prof. Annibale Ingegnatti.

Annibale Ingegnatti, a Natural History teacher at the G.B. Beccaria High School in Mondovì, compiled a manuscript on the birds of the province of Cuneo in 1876, which remained unpublished until now. Thanks to the kindness of the Ingegnatti family, the text could be studied and is reproduced and commented on in this work. The manuscript lists 228 species arranged in systematic order, each with at least one scientific name, one Italian name and, almost always, a name in Piedmontese dialect, along with a short text summarizing their distribution, frequency, and phenology. In some cases, individual captures of rare species are noted, and occasionally the hunters, taxidermists, and collectors who provided information on the most significant species are credited. Ingegnatti's notes have been compared with the main bibliographical sources of his time and, subsequently, with more recent ones. Particularly significant was also the search for specimens in historic ornithological collections, sometimes held in major national museums, sometimes housed in smaller, lesser-known institutions. The Beccaria High School still houses a rich ornithological collection, certainly well known to Ingegnatti. Thanks to these data it was possible to highlight cases in which the status of species has changed, sometimes significantly, primarily due to major changes in the landscape at the local, national, or continental level.
