BEHIND THE BLANK PROFILES: EXPLORING THE EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING AND ACADEMIC IMPACT OF GENERATION Z'S SUBTLE EXPRESSIONS ON SOCIAL MEDIA

         The purpose of this research is to explore and understand the hidden meanings behind the online practices of Generation Z learners who choose to use blank profile pictures and share subtle posts on social media. The study employs a qualitative phenomenological research design to explore and understand the lived experiences of Generation Z learners from selected public or private schools aged 13 to 24 years old, who are active users of social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter/X, and YouTube. Findings revealed that the Generation Z learners use of blank profile pictures and subtle expressions on social media served as their coping mechanisms for a range of challenges. There are six major emerging themes that highlight the implications of their digital practices on emotional well-being and the impact on their academic studies. Including, family struggles, financial struggles, low-key presence as a social identity, social media as stress reliever, academic pressure, and insecurity and self-image concerns. Specifically, the study seeks to uncover the hidden struggles based on the narratives of participants and aims to provide insights and recommend strategies for fostering healthier social, personal, emotional, and academic development. This study aspires to expand the knowledge that will guide educators, parents, and future researchers to prevent similar issues from affecting future generations, particularly Generation Alpha and Generation Beta.
